Pros and Cons of Homeschooling

Pros and Cons of Homeschooling

Home schooling, usually referred to as learning based at home, is an educational procedure where parents and teachers teach their children at home rather than sending them to a public or a private school setting to get formal education. Few years back, this practice and educational process was very common when the mandatory school attendance legislation was not strictly implemented. Nowadays, Homeschooling is not as common as it was in the past but it is still so popular and in demand.

It is permitted in many of the states where parents are not comfortable to send their children to a public or a private school for their formal education, learning, and growth. Many parents prefer homeschooling as this ensures that the children are in a completely safe environment during the whole day. This provides children with more flexible learning opportunities along with moral and religious instructions and teachings which in some cases is not allowed in a public school.

Reasons of Homeschooling

The key reason for parents preferring homeschooling is the dissatisfaction of the parents regarding the quality of education provided in public schools. Another reason that contributes to homeschooling is a desire to be more involved in the education of their children and their growth and development. Parents are more concerned with the school environment, bullying issues in the schools, inability of the schools to cater the personal special needs, and individual attention and focus to the child.

Positive Aspects of Homeschooling

Parents are able to get all the information regarding their children’s curriculum as well as their schooling schedule. Children take education as fun through learning with hands-on activities. Homeschooling is the most beneficial when it’s about creating a strong bond between tutor, parent, and a child. Teaching methodology can be chosen while focusing on the child’s ability to learn and understand basic concepts. Teachers are able to pay full attention to the child and can spend extra time with the kids on complex topics and then move to the next concept after a child understands the previous concept properly. It is easier to provide religious, spiritual, moral, and ethical instructions to the child through homeschooling facilities. A child who can not enroll in the public school because of a tough schedule may benefit from flexible schedules according to their own choice.

Disadvantages of Homeschooling

Homeschooling parents are required to be around their child for the full day. They have to explain the reason for not enrolling their child in the public school frequently to the friends and family that usually make parents confused about their decision. As students are not getting education from school, their parents find it difficult to find age mates or friends with the same circumstances. These children are comparatively less social and confident than those learning in groups or in a school. These children typically spend more time reviewing curriculum programs as per their standards and those best suit their children’s learning needs. These children also face difficulty in solving complex problems and are not able to find the best solution and remedy to the raised issues.
